The Kerala government approved the creation of the Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management- Kerala (IIITM-K) on November 9, 2023. The campus’ construction is projected to be finished by 2025 at a cost of Rs 109.60 Crore. IIITM-K, located on the Technopark campus in Kerala, was an autonomous academic institution established in the year 2000 by the Government of Kerala. It provides postgraduate courses in information technology and computer science. Later, the IIITM-K in Thiruvananthapuram was elevated to the status of a state digital university.

Announcing the new campus, Chief Minister of Kerala Pinarayi Vijayan wrote on “X” (formerly Twitter), “The Government of Kerala has approved the establishment of the Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management- Kerala (IIITM-K). In 2025, the campus will be completed at an estimated cost of Rs 109.60 Crore, accelerating Kerala’s transition to an advanced economy.”

Reportedly, the new IIITM-K campus will have a significant impact on students’ employment opportunities in Kerala. It will give students access to cutting-edge facilities and resources, improving their learning experience. Furthermore, the campus will function as a hub for organisations looking for talented individuals with a background in technology and management. This is projected to increase job prospects in the state, resulting in a stronger economy.

The Kerala cabinet upgraded the Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management – Kerala as the state’s first digital university in January. They set up five different schools in core areas in addition to focusing on research. Computing, electronics design and automation, informatics, digital bioscience, and digital humanities are among the schools.

The government stated “This new move comes in the backdrop of the initiative of the Kerala government for the development and strengthening of the IT industry and digital technology in all spheres of development, so as to speed up the connection between the education and IT industry segments,” as quoted by IANS.

The upgrade signifies that the university will now place a greater emphasis on disruptive technologies such as blockchain, Internet of Things, AI, and data analytics. Further reportedly, the goal of establishing a digital university was to accelerate the growth of digital research and entrepreneurship while also strengthening collaboration between industry and technology-based education. The establishment of a new IIITM-K campus is consistent with the Kerala government’s commitment to improving the quality of higher education in the state.
