The 28-year-old has the chance to become the most successful captain in T20I history by registering a win in the remaining three matches of the series against the Kiwis.
Babar also surpassed Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who won 41 out of 72 matches as Indian skipper.
Australia’s former captain, Aaron Finch, is fifth on the list with 40 wins in 76 T20Is.
Pakistan will take on New Zealand in the third T20I on Monday at the same venue.
