The Common University Entrance Test ( CUET ) 2023 was held from May 21 to May 31 across India. This entrance exam is conducted to secure admission to the central universities in India. Now, almost all the major universities set the minimum CUET score for the candidate to become eligible for admission to the course. This nationwide computer-based test is conducted by the National Testing Agency ( NTA). HNB Garhwal University is seeking candidates for admission without the CUET score this year.
Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna has 121 colleges and institutes affiliated with it over the Garhwal region in Uttrakhand. This year, the University Grant Commission ( UGC) has granted permission to HNB Garhwal University and its affiliated colleges to conduct admissions without the CUET score. It will be applicable for this year only. It should be noted that candidates have to submit their CUET score from next year to become eligible for admission.
This year, HNB Garhwal was supposed to participate in the CUET exams and the admissions were to be done based on the CUET score only but due to a lack of information by the authorities, a large number of students couldn’t participate in it.
Due to this mishap, almost 5,000 seats are left in the University campus and 15000 seats in the affiliated colleges. A total of 20,000 seats are vacant at HNB Garhwal University.
The student organisations protested over the CUET norms. After this, the university sent a report regarding this matter to UGC requesting an exception this year. UGC Secretary Manish R Joshi has issued a Standard Operating Procedure i.e. SOP. As per this procedure, it has been decided that the first preference will be given to candidates who have appeared for CUET this year. If the seats remain empty after that, then the screening test will be conducted for the remaining seats. It can also be done based on merit made from Class 12 and the graduation marks. It is up to the college and its course guidelines.
