Growing faster than China: Narayana Murthy says infrastructure industry should work three shifts to complete projects – Times of India

Infosys founder NR Narayana Murthy has emphasized the need for three working shifts in infrastructure and construction projects to ensure timely completion. Speaking at the Bengaluru Tech Summit, Murthy discussed the importance of India making quick decisions in infrastructure development, drawing a parallel with China’s progress.
During a fireside chat with Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath, Murthy stressed that completing projects like the Electronic City metro and other metros should be prioritized, according to an ET report. He urged the infrastructure industry to move beyond the traditional one-shift workday and adopt a three-shift system to boost efficiency. “They should not work just one shift, come 11 am and go at 5 pm,” he was quoted as saying.
Murthy highlighted that people in nations with ambitious aspirations often operate on two work shifts. He expressed confidence that if India embraced a similar approach, it could potentially surpass China’s growth. However, he emphasized the need for prompt decision-making and the removal of obstacles for entrepreneurs to achieve this goal.In terms of Bengaluru’s contribution to India’s software exports, Murthy stated that the city accounts for approximately 35% to 37% of the country’s total software exports. “You’re looking at $75 billion from just Bengaluru because $200 billion is the total exports from India,” he said.
When asked about the potential challenges posed by emerging technologies such as GPT-4, Murthy reiterated the significance of the human mind’s adaptability and power. He emphasized that technology’s purpose is to improve lives and increase productivity, with inventions and continuous innovations driving progress.
Murthy emphasized that a company’s ability to foster a culture of constant innovation is the key to growth, survival, and success. As long as CEOs encourage such thinking among employees, the impact of technologies like ChatGPT, LLMs, ML, or deep learning should not be a concern, he said.
