Schools in Uttar Pradesh will remain open today, October 1. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed that government secondary schools as well as schools of all other boards in the state remain open on Sunday in view of Gandhi Jayanti being celebrated on October 2.
A one-hour ‘Shramdaan’ programme will be organised under the ‘Swachhajanli’ programme for which schools have been directed to remain open. Furthermore, ‘Prabhat Pheris’ will be taken out in all schools following which students and teachers will have to perform Shramdaan. After this, sweets will be distributed to students.
October 2, 2023, marks the 154th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Due to this, a 154-hour special cleanliness campaign has begun. Schoolchildren have been instructed to take out Prabhat Pheri and give the message of ‘Cleanliness is Service’ to the people. People will be made aware of the ban on plastic and polythene.
Gandhi Jayanti is observed every year on October 2 to mark the birth anniversary of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, often known as Mahatma Gandhi. A forerunner of non-violence and truth, Gandhi founded the Satyagraha and Ahimsa movement during the Indian liberation struggle. As the Father of the Nation, he spearheaded India’s independence struggle alongside many other national leaders in opposition to British rule in India.
Not just on October 2, the UP government also instructed schools to make morning assemblies compulsory and talk about cleanliness. The secondary education department in Uttar Pradesh has issued directives to make a 15-minute morning assembly mandatory in all schools of the state. CM Adityanath asked principals to make morning assemblies in schools a part of the curriculum and to reach 15 minutes before it starts.
“In the assembly, students will be encouraged to take a pledge for different purposes like cleanliness, talk about quotable quotes of great personalities, discuss important news of the day, quiz on general topics, and recitation of the national anthem,” read a notification issued by Mahendra Dev, director, secondary education.
