PESHAWAR:
Pakistan is a country with one of the highest number of maternal deaths, according to Dr Zafar Mirza, Professor of Health Systems Development and a former WHO advisor.
He was speaking at a review and training ceremony for the United Nations Population Funds’ (UNPF) ongoing project for female primary care physicians related to reproductive health in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Integrated Tribal Districts, which was held at Peshawar Medical College.
He also said that Pakistan ranks second after the South African country of Lesotho in terms of infant deaths. He urged project staff to use the lessons learned throughout the years for their professional service in development as their healthcare resolutions for the New Year (2023).
Professor Zafar Mirza was the guest of honour, while Dr Saeed Anwar, Director of the Prime Institute of Public Health, was also present.
Prof Mirza appreciated the efforts of Maternal and Newborn Child Health (MNCH) workers for serving the national cause by providing services in the remote and backward areas of the country.
Prof Zubair also distributed certificates and shields to the participants of the workshop. Prof. Saeed presented a memento to the chief guest in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the development of the health system in the country and global health coverage.
