There are more than 1000 varieties of mangoes available across the globe. Among these varieties, some are great Indian varieties that many are unaware of. While the Alphonso mangoes are unrivalled, this summer, check out these seven mango varieties from across India that come with a GI tag.
Banganapalle (Andhra Pradesh)
This golden-yellow mango is known for its firm, fibreless flesh and a rich, sweet taste that lingers. It has a long shelf life, making it ideal for storage or gifting. Mildly aromatic and smooth in texture, Banganapalle is often considered a classic all-rounder.
Dasheri (Uttar Pradesh)
A North Indian favourite, Dasheri mangoes are small to medium in size with a greenish-yellow skin and an incredibly juicy, sweet pulp. Their strong fragrance is unmistakable, and the flavour is mellow and honey-like. Often eaten fresh, they’re also great in mango-based drinks.
Langra (Uttar Pradesh & Bihar)
Langra stands out for its distinct tanginess and creamy texture. Despite being green even when ripe, it’s intensely aromatic and flavourful. The pulp is soft, fibreless, and slightly acidic, making it popular among those who prefer a punchy, less sugary mango.
Himsagar (West Bengal)
Considered one of the finest mangoes in India, Himsagar is completely fibreless and exceptionally juicy. It has a short season—just a few weeks in early summer—making it a sought-after delicacy.
Gir Kesar (Gujarat)
Often called the ‘queen of mangoes,’ Gir Kesar is famous for its vibrant saffron-coloured pulp and unmistakably sweet, floral flavour. Grown in the foothills of the Girnar mountains, this variety is juicy, fragrant, and slightly grainy in texture. It’s a favourite for making mango desserts like aamras and shrikhand, thanks to its richness and depth.
