Back in 2006 Farhan Akhtar played director to the reboot of the Amitabh Bachchan 1978 film labelled Don. Starring Shah Rukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra with the same storyline as the 1978 film, the Dil Chahta Hai (2001) director certainly did justice to it as it was declared a hit. Subsequently in 2011 he followed it up with a sequel Don 2. Now, after over a decade, the revered filmmaker has announced the third instalment of the franchise.
The curiosity around Don 3 has finally been addressed as Akhtar has finally released an official teaser for the movie. On Tuesday, the director published a formal announcement on his Twitter handle, appreciating the efforts of Amitabh Bachan and Shah Rukh Khan as the titular characters. Akhtar also added that “the time has now come to take the legacy of Don forward” and “an actor whose talent and versatility” he has long admired, will be joining the franchise. He concluded the announcement with a short note, “A new era of Don begins in 2025. Watch this space.”
It is now clear that Shah Rukh Khan will not be reprising his role as Don in the third instalment. This has led to wide speculations that Ranveer Singh has been chosen as the next Don. However, fans of the franchise are refusing to accept this change. Replies to Akhtar’s Twitter post show fans protesting the absence of Shah Rukh Khan from the titular character. It is a common belief among fans that Ranveer Singh will not be able to deliver the character with the same charisma as Shah Rukh Khan. One user said, “No interest in watching anyone else as Don! It has to be @iamsrk”
