A social media post claims that a mixture of garlic, lemon juice, and mustard oil can cure lice forever in just one use. Our fact check shows this is false.
The Claim
An Instagram post claims that applying a mixture of garlic juice, lemon juice, and mustard oil can treat lice in just one use. The post further claims that this remedy prevents lice infestations forever, lasting 100 years.
Fact Check
Can garlic juice, lemon juice, and mustard oil kill lice in one use?
Not really. The claim that garlic completely eliminates head lice in 30 minutes is not supported by robust scientific evidence. While laboratory studies (2010, 2016) have demonstrated that garlic juice can kill lice under controlled conditions, these studies were not conducted on human subjects, and crucially, often failed to eliminate the lice eggs. A 2020 study showed garlic’s effectiveness at high concentrations but was limited to a small number of lice (28 lice subjects) in a lab setting. Conversely, a 2018 study involving children found garlic oil to be largely ineffective. Similarly, lab-based studies from 2010 indicated that lemon juice could kill lice, but the real-world application of these findings remains uncertain. Lemon and mustard oil may offer temporary weakening effects, but they do not reliably eradicate lice or their eggs.
A 2023 study in Nepal explored affordable alternatives, finding a salt, vinegar, and wetting agent solution to be more effective than mustard oil, and plastic lice combs to be as effective as metal ones. This highlights the potential for accessible treatments. However, due to the resilience of lice and the difficulty in eliminating their eggs, relying solely on single natural remedies like this is unlikely to resolve an infestation completely. Therefore, clinically proven lice treatments remain the most dependable option for effectively addressing head lice.
Dr Ekansh Shekhar, Dermatologist, Cosmetologist, Trichologist, and Aesthetic Medicine Consultant in Lucknow, clarifies, “Although some natural remedies like garlic, lemon, and mustard oil may offer temporary relief or have shown limited effects in lab settings, they are not a reliable, one-time cure for head lice. Clinically proven pediculicides (medicated treatments designed to kill lice) remain the most effective and recommended treatment option. It’s crucial to consult a dermatologist for proper diagnosis and treatment to avoid prolonged infestation and potential complications.”
Does this mixture prevent lice forever?
No, it does not. Lice spread through direct contact and shared items like combs, hats, and bedding. No home remedy can offer permanent protection against reinfestation. If a person is exposed to lice again, they will likely get infected, regardless of past treatments. The idea that this remedy can prevent lice for “100 years” is an exaggerated and false claim.
Similarly, another home remedy claims that consuming desi ghee and garlic on an empty stomach can prevent cancer, but no scientific evidence supports this. While garlic offers health benefits, moderation is essential. It’s important to be aware of safe daily intake limits to avoid potential side effects.
What are the scientifically proven treatments for lice?
Medical treatments are far more effective. Over-the-counter (OTC) lice shampoos containing permethrin or pyrethrin are widely recommended and work by targeting live lice. Prescription medications like malathion or ivermectin are used in more severe or resistant cases.
Another effective method is wet combing with a fine-toothed lice comb, which helps physically remove lice and eggs when done regularly. Applying conditioner can make the process easier by immobilising the lice for easier removal. However, no treatment is completely foolproof.
Dr Rashi Soni, Dermatologist and Co-founder of Rashi Hospital in Mumbai, explains, “Scientifically proven treatments for head lice primarily involve pediculicides, which are medications specifically designed to kill lice and, in some cases, their eggs. These include over-the-counter options containing permethrin or pyrethrin, and prescription medications like malathion, spinosad, or ivermectin. It’s essential to follow the product’s instructions carefully for optimal effectiveness. Additionally, thorough nit combing and environmental measures, such as washing bedding and clothing, can help prevent re-infestation. Always consult a dermatologist or healthcare provider to determine the most appropriate treatment plan for your specific situation.”
How can lice infestations be prevented?
Preventing lice requires regular checks and good hygiene practices:
- Avoid head-to-head contact with people who have lice.
- Do not share combs, brushes, hats, or bedding.
- Wash infested items in hot water (above 60°C) and dry on high heat.
- Regularly check children’s hair for lice, especially during school outbreaks.
