In a historic decision, Indian Railways has announced that only vegetarian food will be served on the Vande Bharat Express running from Delhi to Katra. This is the first train in India to offer exclusively satvik (pure vegetarian) meals to its passengers.
Passengers are not permitted to bring non-vegetarian food or snacks aboard, even if prepared at home. This measure is part of an agreement between the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) and the Sattvik Council of India, which has officially declared the train completely vegetarian. The train’s kitchen does not prepare any non-vegetarian food, and the waiters serve solely vegetarian meals.
The New Delhi-Katra Vande Bharat Express is designed specifically for devotees of Mata Vaishno Devi, who prefer satvik food during their journey. The meals served on this train are free from eggs, meat, and any non-vegetarian ingredients, earning the train a ‘Sattvik’ certificate.
This initiative, which began in 2021 in collaboration with the Satvik Council of India, aims to provide pure and satvik food to religious travellers. IRCTC is now working to make many trains on religious routes Sattvik Certified, ensuring that devotees can enjoy pure and satvik food while travelling.
Indian Railways, a cornerstone of India’s economy and connectivity, has taken this significant step in addressing concerns about food served on its trains. This move comes in response to long-standing passenger apprehensions regarding the cleanliness and purity of food, especially when vegetarian and non-vegetarian items are prepared together.
