Sara Ali Khan recently revealed her go-to morning ritual during a rapid-fire session with Curly Tales: starting her day with a glass of haldi pani (turmeric water). Known for her dedication to fitness and her inspiring weight loss journey, Sara shared that turmeric water is the first thing she drinks every morning to kickstart her day.

Meanwhile, the buzz around detox water and its purported benefits continues to dominate wellness trends online. Recipes for detox water—created by infusing water with fruits, vegetables, or herbs—are all over the internet. However, experts caution that many of the claims associated with detox water are not backed by science.

In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Anantha Krishnan, an internal medicine specialist and diabetologist at Prashanth Hospitals, Chennai, addressed these misconceptions. “Detox water is largely an internet myth. Claims that it aids in weight loss, detoxifies the body, alkalizes pH levels, boosts immunity, or enhances digestion lack scientific evidence,” he explained. He further added, “Any benefits associated with detox water come from the water itself, not the infused ingredients. At best, detox water acts as flavored water and encourages hydration, which many people might otherwise neglect.”

Key Considerations for Detox Water

While staying hydrated is crucial, Dr. Krishnan highlighted some important points to keep in mind regarding detox water:

  1. Avoid overdoing itProlonged use of detox water or extreme crash diets won’t significantly boost immunity or lead to sustainable weight loss.
  2. Be cautious with ingredientsNot all natural ingredients suit everyone. Some may cause adverse effects like acidity, ulcers, or gastric issues.
  3. High-risk populationsPregnant women, individuals with kidney or liver problems, and those with other health conditions should consult a doctor before consuming detox water.Dietician Vaishali Verma, a consultant in nutrition and dietetics at Manipal Hospital Dwarka, New Delhi, also debunked common myths surrounding detox water in a previous interview with HT Lifestyle. While detox water may not directly contribute to fat loss, she noted that turmeric itself has beneficial properties. “Curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, is a powerful anti-inflammatory agent and can help reduce inflammation in the body,” she explained.

Detox water may not be the magical solution it’s often portrayed as, but it can still play a role in encouraging better hydration habits. For those inspired by Sara Ali Khan’s love for turmeric water, incorporating it into your morning routine might bring some anti-inflammatory benefits—just remember to focus on a balanced diet and consult with a healthcare professional before trying new wellness trends.
