Hariyali Teej is a significant festival marked by the married women in India. The celebration is popular in North Indian states, particularly in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Jharkhand. Typically occurring two days ahead of Nag Panchami, Hariyali Teej falls on Shukla Paksha Tritiya in the Shravana month and honours Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. As per the Gregorian calendar, the festival is scheduled to be celebrated this year on August 7.

Hariyali Teej History

Hariyali Teej commemorates Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati’s love and sacred union.

Parvati is said to have had 107 births before she was able to marry Lord Shiva. When Parvati took birth for the 108th time, she could marry Lord Shiva on the Shukla Paksha Tritiya of Shravan.

She broke off all ties during that time, and for a while she lived her days chewing on dry leaves. But Lord Shiva’s strict discipline of celibacy prevented him from realising Parvati’s love for him.

Parvati understood that in order to attract Lord Shiva’s attention, she needed to show him her love. After making the perilous trek to the Himalayas, she settled in a cave wherein she was totally engrossed in her adoration of Lord Shiva.

With her devotion for Lord Shiva, Parvati carved a Shiva Lingam out of sand. Lord Shiva, pleased by her devotion, stood before her and granted her desire.

Because of the fast she had kept and the ceremonies she had performed during the day, Lord Shiva declared that Goddess Parvati was his wife.

Since then, it has been thought that any woman who observes this fast with complete devotion would receive the benefits she desires from Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

Hariyali Teej Significance

On Hariyali Teej, Hindu women fast without drinking water for the whole day and offer prayers for their husbands to enjoy long and successful lives.

According to Hindu mythology, a woman may shield her spouse from all dangers if she wears all 16 ornaments. This is particularly meaningful for the newlyweds.

  4. Women observe a Nirjala Vrat (fast) on Hariyali Teej, during which they abstain from eating or drinking anything for the whole day.
  5. Both married and single women may perform the vrat.
  6. Married women fast for the blessings of wealth, harmony, and long life for their spouse and family.
  7. Unmarried women fast in the aim of meeting a decent spouse and leading a happy marriage.
  8. After 24 hours, when all the rites associated with the Hariyali Teej Puja and Vrat are performed, women can consume water.
