DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Emirates Group posted its highest-ever half-year earnings, reporting net profit of 10.1 billion dirhams ($2.75 billion) for 2023-24 on rebounding demand.

The figure eclipsed its half-year profit of the previous year — 4.2 billion dirhams — by 138%.

The earnings beat was driven by strong demand for international travel, as the industry continues its recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic. Group revenue was 67.3 billion dirhams, up 20% from the previous year’s six-month revenue figure.

Emirates Group, the state-owned Dubai-based holding company of which Emirates Airline is a subsidiary, also reported a figure for earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) of 20.6 billion dirhams, up from 15.3 billion dirhams the same period last year. It reported its cash position at 42.7 billion dirhams.

“The Group has been able to tap on its own strong cash reserves to support business needs, including debt payments,” the company’s earnings statement said, adding that Emirates has reimbursed 9.2 billion dirhams of its Covid-19 related loans and the group has paid 4.5 billion dirhams in dividend to its owner, which was declared at the end of the 2022-23 financial year.

Emirates Airline and Group Chairman and CEO, Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed al Maktoum, said in an accompanying statement, “We are seeing the fruition of our plans to return stronger and better from the dark days of the pandemic. The Group has surpassed previous records to report our best-ever half-year performance.”

He added that the group’s profit for the first six months of the 2023-2024 financial year has “nearly matched our record full year profit in 2022-23.”

“For the second half of 2023-24, we expect customer demand across our business divisions to remain healthy and we will stay agile in how we deploy our resources in this dynamic marketplace,” Al Maktoum said. “At the same time, we are keeping a close watch on headwinds such as rising fuel prices, the strengthening US dollar, inflationary costs, and geo-politics.”

Air India Cockpit Incident: DGCA Orders To Deroster Entire Crew Of Dubai-Delhi Flight

Nearly two months after an Air India pilot allowed a female friend into the cockpit during a Dubai-Delhi flight, aviation watchdog DGCA has directed the airline to deroster the entire crew till investigations are complete, according to a senior official. A cabin crew member of the flight had filed a complaint with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) about the pilot allowing a female friend into the cockpit. The incident had happened on February 27.

On the condition of anonymity, the official at the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said though prima-facie, the cabin crew seems to have no role in the incident, the entire crew of the flight has been derostered pending investigations.

There is an allegation, which is being investigated and the principle of natural justice will apply, and the pilot concerned will also be given an opportunity to present his case, the official said on Wednesday.

The official also said the pilot will remain grounded till a final decision in the matter is taken by the regulator.

While there was no immediate comment from Air India on the latest development, the airline, on April 21, said it had taken a serious note of the reported incident and that investigations were underway.

Unauthorised people are not allowed to enter the cockpit and any such entry could be in violation of norms.

Watch: Cargolux Boeing 747 Suffers Engine Damage While Landing, Lands Safely In Second Attempt

A Cargolux aircraft flying from Dubai Al Maktoum International Airport to Luxembourg Findel Airport got in a minor accident at its destination airport. The plane sustained damages after one of its engines touched the runway during the landing. Noticing the incident, the pilot initiated a go-around and landed the aircraft safely, avoiding a major accident. It is to be noted that the aircraft in the incident is a Boeing 747-400F.

The incident with flight CV-7545 occurred on April 15th after the plane completed its flight from Luxembourg to Dubai. As per reports, after the plane scratched the runway, the pilot aborted the landing to try again. Before attempting another landing, the pilot reached 4,000 feet. The second attempt was successfully completed at around 18:45.

  • Uber-owned Careem launches spinout with $400 million investment from UAE tech holding company e&

Uber-owned Careem launches spinout with $400 million investment from UAE tech holding company e&

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Uber-owned ride-hailing service Careem announced Monday a spinout with major backing from a new source, as well as from its parent company.

Abu Dhabi-based tech holding company e&, formerly Etisalat, signed a binding agreement with Uber Technologies to acquire a 50.03% majority stake in the spinout — which will be known as Careem Technologies — with a $400 million investment.

Careem’s ride-hailing business remains fully owned by Uber, which acquired it for $3.1 billion in 2019. Uber’s stake in the spinout is currently undisclosed.

Careem Technologies will focus on the growth of the company’s “super app,” which offers dozens of services beyond ride-hailing in one app. Some of those services include Careem Quik grocery delivery in 15 minutes or less, food delivery, PCR test booking, digital payments and remittances transfers, bicycle rentals, laundry and cleaning services, and event ticket booking.

“The non-ride services that are Careem-owned and operated today will be owned and operated by Careem Technologies in the future,” a spokesperson for Careem told CNBC. Services offered by third-party partners, like laundry service Washmen or events marketplace Tikety, will remain operated by those third parties.

Careem has emphasized Uber’s enduring role in the new entity. “Uber will continue to have a shareholding in the spinout, but the spinout will be independent with a different ownership structure,” the spokesperson said.

Asked why the creation of an independent entity was needed, the spokesperson explained that Uber being a publicly listed company meant that there were restrictions on how new investment could come in.

“It wasn’t necessarily that we felt a spinout was required in any way, and I think Uber’s continued ownership stake in the spinout is a testament to their continued belief in the Super App vision and desire to be part of this journey,” he said. “But ultimately, I think, with Uber being a publicly listed company, there are only so many ways you can take new investment from a new party.”

With the nearly half billion dollar investment and majority stake in Careem Technologies from e& as well as ongoing support from Uber, Careem says it’s confident about the growth of its super app goals going forward.

“I am thrilled to partner with Careem, and welcome e&, as we grow the Careem super app to deliver more services to millions of people in this fast-moving part of the world,” Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said in a statement.

Careem operates in over 80 cities and 10 countries, according to its website. Established in 2012 in Dubai by co-founders Mudassir Sheikha and Magnus Olsson, the company grew from a Dubai-based ride sharing firm to a “Super App” platform, used across the Middle East from Morocco to Pakistan.

For e&, the investment is part of a broader strategy to expand from what was formerly a telecommunications company to a larger global technology and investments group. e& CEO Hatem Dowidar told CNBC in March 2022 that telcos, including e& predecessor Etisalat, “need to move out of the traditional telco model and move up the value chain.”

“We saw how the tech giants grew. We look now at their market caps and the returns they offer, and we feel jealous,” Dowidar said at the time.

Holding a majority stake in Careem Technologies appears to be in line with the company’s aim to increase and scale its consumer digital offerings.

“e& is investing $400m to become a majority shareholder in Careem’s Super App alongside Uber and all three of Careem’s co-founders,” a statement from e& said. The investment will significantly accelerate Careem’s goal to create “the first ‘everything app’ for customers across the Middle East,” the firm wrote.

Dubai-based Careem “expects significant synergies with e& and anticipates benefiting from e&’s large customer base” as well as its experience scaling tech businesses across a geographic area that both companies share, it added.
