     —

After a dominant unbeaten run, Iga Świątek was finally beaten as she was stunned by Barbora Krejčíková in final of Dubai Tennis Championships.

The world No. 1 had dropped just nine games en route to the final – the fewest ever to reach a WTA 1000 final – surpassing the previous record of 10 held by Serena Williams in 2013.

But in the final, she faced an inspired Krejčíková, with the Czech player winning 6-4 6-2.

It is the second time she has beaten Poland’s Świątek in the final of a tournament in recent months, having won at the AGEL Open in her home country in October of last year.

And the former world No. 2 grabbed a memorable title, her first of the year, by beating the scorching hot Świątek in 91-minutes in Dubai.

After victory at the Qatar Open last week, Świątek was the in form player of those making the short trip to Dubai.

And she kept up her red-hot form by reaching the final, meaning she dropped just 14 games in the six matches she played before Saturday’s final.

Świątek became the second player ever to reach six WTA 1000 finals before turning 22 since Caroline Wozniacki in 2009.

But in Krejčíková, she faced inspired opposition.

The 27-year-old gave no quarter throughout, breaking Świątek midway through the opening set before claiming an important one set lead.

And she never relinquished it, once again breaking the three-time grand slam winner to claim a famous victory.

Krejčíková celebrates defeating Świątek in the final of the Dubai Tennis Championships.

It means that after beating world No. 2 Ons Jabeur and No. 3 Jessica Pegula in the previous two rounds, Krejčíková becomes the fifth player to beat the top three ranked players at the same event.

She defeated four top-10 players at the Dubai Tennis Championships this year, which is as many as in her previous 24 tournaments played.

And as a result, Krejčíková is scheduled to rise from No. 30 to No. 16 in the world rankings.

New Zealand Flooding: Emirates Dubai-Auckland A380 Flight Makes U-Turn After Being 7 Hrs in Sky

An Emirates Airline flight going from Dubai to Auckland made a U-turn 7 hours after being in the air, due to flooding in New Zealand. As seen on flight tracking website FlightRadar24, an Airbus A380 superjumbo plane operated by Emirates on the way to Auckland Airport returned back to the Dubai International Airport after travelling for 7 hours due to heavy rainfall in New Zealand, that resulted in flooding in many parts of the country, including Auckland. The flight was over the Indian Ocean, near Malaysia, when a decision to return back to the originating country was taken by the Captain.

Torrential rain and wild weather in Auckland on Friday caused disruptions throughout New Zealand’s largest city. Video posted online showed waist-deep water in some places, and authorities were asking residents in flood-prone areas to be prepared in case they needed to evacuate. Lawmaker Ricardo Mendez posted a video of water surging into residential houses. “We’ve just had to evacuate our home as the water was already rising rapidly and coming in aggressively,” he tweeted.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand said it had taken over 1,000 calls for help, but that many calls were from people who had flooded properties. The agency was urging callers to clear the lines for those in immediate danger. The unseasonable weather also caused some flights to be delayed or canceled.

Auckland Airport said it had reduced its runway operations after an arriving aircraft had damaged runway lighting. “This is largely impacting international arrivals and departures and larger aircraft travelling domestically,” the airport wrote on Twitter. “Our maintenance team is on site and is working hard to fix the damage.”

The storm also caused an Elton John concert to be canceled just before it was due to start. About 40,000 people were expected to attend the evening concert at Mt Smart Stadium in New Zealand’s largest city. Thousands were already at the venue when organizers decided to cancel not long before John was due to take the stage at 7:30 p.M.

The concert was billed as a final farewell tour for John. Frontier Touring, one of the concert promoters, tweeted the concert had been canceled due to unsafe weather conditions. Many concert goers who had braved the conditions were frustrated the decision hadn’t been made hours earlier.

Weather agency MetService warned of flash flooding and hazardous driving conditions. On Friday night, transport authorities closed parts of State Highway 1, the main highway that bisects Auckland.

  • Where are the safest places to travel in 2023? It depends on how you define ‘safe’

Where are the safest places to travel in 2023? It depends on how you define ‘safe’

From catching Covid-19 to getting caught in a blizzard, traveling can be risky business these days.

But just how risky often depends on the destination — and how you define the risks.

    Safest cities: people’s perceptions

A report published by the U.K.-based insurance company William Russell ranked the “safest cities in the world,” according to people’s perceptions.

On this list, which relied on perceived crime rates on the crowdsourced global database Numbeo, Asia and Europe dominated the rankings of “safest” cities.

Taiwan’s Taipei scored the highest, while Buenos Aires, Argentina, ranked the lowest (score: 36.7), according to the report.

    Safest cities: health and politics

But the top five places for “health and safety” in Euromonitor International’s “Top 100 City Destinations Index 2022” are different.

That ranking, published in December, analyzed “political stability and social safety,” which includes the impact of Covid-19 (such as total cases, death and vaccination rates) as well as road injury accidents, government corruption and terrorism statistics.

Here, cities in the Middle East and Asia came out on top.

    1. Sharjah, United Arab Emirates
    2. Dubai, United Arab Emirates
    3. Doha, Qatar
    4. Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
    5. Singapore, Singapore

Paris topped market research company Euromonitor International’s “Top 100 City Destinations” for 2022, but the United Arab Emirates’ Sharjah, shown here, ranked highest in terms of health and safety.

“The Middle East … takes the first four positions,” said Vitalij Vladykin, senior research manager at Euromonitor International, while “Singapore is ranked first in terms of the political stability category in 2019-2022.”

“Health and safety” is one of six factors used by Euromonitor International to compile its annual city destinations index.

    Safest places: medical risks

    Medical risks by country.

    International SOS

The map shows Yemen, Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, North Korea and parts of Africa have “very high” medical risks, which International SOS defines as having “almost non-existent or severely overtaxed” health-care systems.

The countries colored in purple have “significant variation” in medical risks, which can mean discrepancies in care levels between cities and rural areas, according to the report.

This map does not reflect the Covid-19 outbreak currently occurring in China, said Dr. Irene Lai, medical director at International SOS. Rather than showing specific disease outbreaks, the map focuses on “background” medical situations in countries around the world, she said.

    Safest places: security risks

International SOS’s Travel Risk Map also assesses security risks, which include crime as well as political violence such as terrorism and war, social unrest and susceptibility to natural disasters, according to the company.

Sally Llewellyn, International SOS’ security director, said that some 25 spots around the world have “insignificant” security risks: American Samoa, Andorra, Anguilla, British Virgin Islands, Cape Verde, Cayman Islands, Cook Islands, Denmark, Finland, Greenland, Iceland, Kiribati, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Marshall Islands, Monaco, Nauru, Norway, San Marino, Seychelles, Slovenia, Switzerland, Turks and Caicos, Tuvalu and Wallis and Futuna.

Some countries have varying risk levels within their borders. For example, the map shows most of Egypt has “high” security risks, but risks are lower in Cairo and areas east of the Nile River.

Mexico has a combination of “medium” and “high” risks on the map, while Thailand’s borders with Myanmar, Malaysia and Cambodia are deemed to be risker than the rest of the country, according to the map.

International SOS said security risks increased in several places this year, including Ukraine, Colombia and the Sahel.

The Sahel is a region in North Africa that includes portions of Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Chad, Sudan and other countries. The region has a mix of “high” and “extreme” security risks, according to the map.

Tennis legend Sania Mirza reveals her retirement plan – SUCH TV

Sania Mirza, India’s former doubles world number one, said she will call time on her career aged 36 after next month’s Dubai Tennis Championships, after her 2022 retirement plans were delayed due to injury.

Mirza, regarded as her country’s greatest women’s tennis player, has won six Grand Slam doubles titles and will compete in her final major this month at the Australian Open, where she bagged the women’s doubles crown in 2016.

“I was going to stop right after the WTA Finals because we were going to make the WTA Finals, but I tore my tendon in my elbow right before the US Open, so I had to pull out of everything,” Mirza told in an interview on Friday.

Mirza, who has been dealing with a lingering calf injury, had planned to retire at the end of the 2022 season but an elbow injury in August ruled her out of the US Open.

“Honestly, the person that I am, I like to do things on my own terms. So I don’t want to be forced out by injury. So I’ve been training,” she added.

Mirza became the first Indian to win a WTA singles title, when she won her hometown Hyderabad event in 2005. She broke into the top 30 by 2007 and reached her career-high ranking of world number 27.

After being plagued by a recurring, career-threatening wrist injury, Mirza forged a doubles partnership with Swiss great Martina Hingis. The self-styled “Santina” team won 14 titles, including Wimbledon and the US and Australian Opens.
