  • Rock & Roll Hall of Fame class of 2025 includes Chubby Checker, the White Stripes, Cyndi Lauper and OutKast

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame class of 2025 includes Chubby Checker, the White Stripes, Cyndi Lauper and OutKast

First-time nominees Chubby Checker, Joe Cocker and Bad Company will be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, a class that also includes pop star Cyndi Lauper, the hip-hop pioneers Outkast, the rock duo the White Stripes and grunge masters Soundgarden.

Salt-N-Pepa, the first female rap act to achieve gold and platinum status, and the late singer-songwriter Warren Zevon will get the Musical Influence Award. The late record producer Thom Bell, pianist Nicky Hopkins and bassist Carol Kaye will each get the Musical Excellence Award.

The late Cocker, who sang at Woodstock and was best known for his cover of The Beatles’ “With a Little Help From My Friends,” had the backing of Billy Joel, Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top and Pete Thomas, a member of Elvis Costello & The Attractions, who argued that Cocker is “about as rock and roll as it gets.”

Soundgarden — with the late Chris Cornell as singer — get into the Hall on their third nomination. They follow two other grunge acts in the Hall — Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Bad Company get in having become radio fixtures with such arena-rock staples as “Feel Like Makin’ Love,” “Can’t Get Enough” and “Rock ‘n’ Roll Fantasy.”

The Ahmet Ertegun Award — given to nonperforming industry professionals who had a major influence on music — will go to Lenny Waronker, a former head of Warner Bros. Records who signed Prince and R.E.M., and had a part in records from Madonna, Randy Newman, the Doobie Brothers, Rickie Lee Jones, Paul Simon and Gary Clark Jr.

Some nominees that didn’t get in this year include Mariah Carey, Phish, Billy Idol, Joy Division/New Order, Maná, the Black Crowes and Oasis.

Checker’s recording of “The Twist,” and subsequent “Let’s Twist Again” are considered among the most popular songs in the history of rock ‘n’ roll. The 83-year-old has expressed frustration that he hadn’t been granted entry before, including telling the AP in 2014: “I don’t want to get in there when I’m 85 years old. I’ll tell them to drop dead, so you better do it quick while I’m still smiling.”

Lauper rose to fame in the 1980s with hits such as “Time After Time” and “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” and went on to win a Tony Award for “Kinky Boots.” OutKast, made up of André 3000 and Big Boi, have six Grammys and a reputation for pushing the boundaries of hip-hop. The White Stripes — made up of Jack White and Meg White — were indie darlings in the early 2000s with such songs as “Seven Nation Army.”

Artists must have released their first commercial recording at least 25 years before they’re eligible for induction. The induction ceremony will take place in Los Angeles this fall.

Nominees were voted on by more than 1,200 artists, historians and music industry professionals. The selection criteria include “an artist’s impact on other musicians, the scope and longevity of their career and body of work, as well as their innovation and excellence in style and technique.”

Last year, Mary J. Blige,Cher, Foreigner, A Tribe Called Quest, Kool & The Gang, Ozzy Osbourne, Dave Matthews Band and singer-guitarist Peter Frampton all were inducted.

  • Christopher Ciccone, artist and Madonna’s younger brother, dies at 63

Christopher Ciccone, artist and Madonna’s younger brother, dies at 63

Christopher Ciccone, an artist and former dancer who was also singer Madonna’s younger brother, has died, his rep Brad Taylor confirmed to CBS News. He was 63.

He died from cancer on Oct. 4, surrounded by his husband, Ray Thacker, Taylor said in a statement.

Born on Nov. 22, 1960, in Pontiac, Michigan, Ciccone was an artist, interior decorator and designer, who began his career as a dancer. He joined the Le Group de La Palace Royale in Ottawa in 1980 before moving to New York two years later to support his older sister’s music career as a backup dancer.

As Madonna’s career grew, Ciccone became more involved — serving as the art director on his sister’s Blond Ambition World Tour in 1990 and as the tour director for her The Girlie Show in 1993. He also directed music videos for megastars Dolly Parton and Tony Bennett in the 1990s.

His role expanded away from music when Ciccone took on the role of interior designer within the homes his sister owned and occupied in New York, Miami, and Los Angeles.

In 2012, Ciccone released his own shoe line, The Ciccone Collection, at London Fashion Week.

He told CBS News at the time that his goal is to make the brand “accessible to everybody” and not too pricey.

“The great thing about doing shoes is that potentially everyone could have a pair. When you’re doing art, there’s only one,” Ciccone said

Ciccone, who was openly gay, claimed that his sister outed him during her 1991 interview with The Advocate.

Ciccone released a tell-all autobiography called “Life With My Sister Madonna,” leading to reports that the two had been estranged, but Ciccone told CBS News in 2012 that he was glad he wrote the book.

“I don’t regret any of that,” he said. “I think because of that it sort of led me to this. It gave people an opportunity to think of me as a creative person, as an artist and not just as Madonna’s brother, which is a tag I’m going to wear forever,” Ciccone said in 2012. “But I’m hopeful that at some point it will be Christopher Ciccone first. It’s cool…I’m perfectly happy being what I am.”

    The two eventually made up.

“Our relationship is fine as far as I’m concerned,” he told CBS News.

    Ciccone and Thacker — a British-born actor — married in 2016.

Ciccone’s death comes fewer than two weeks after the death of his and Madonna’s stepmother, Joan Clare Ciccone, from cancer. His eldest brother Anthony died in 2023.

  • Madonna’s biggest concert brings estimated 1.6 million to Rio’s Copacabana beach

Madonna’s biggest concert brings estimated 1.6 million to Rio’s Copacabana beach

Madonna put on a free concert on Copacabana beach Saturday night, turning Rio de Janeiro’s vast stretch of sand into an enormous dance floor teeming with a multitude of her fans.

It was the last show of The Celebration Tour, her first retrospective, which kicked off in October in London.

The “Queen of Pop” began the show with her 1998 hit “Nothing Really Matters.” Huge cheers rose from the buzzing, tightly packed crowd, pressed up against the barriers. Others held house parties in brightly lighted apartments and hotels overlooking the beachfront. Helicopters and drones flew overhead, and motorboats and sailboats anchored off the beach filled the bay.

“Here we are in the most beautiful place in the world,” Madonna, 65, told the crowd. Pointing out the ocean view, the mountains and the Christ the Redeemer statue overlooking the city, she added: “This place is magic.”

Madonna performed her classic hits, including “Like A Virgin” and “Hung Up.” For the introduction to “Like A Prayer,” her head was completely covered in a black cape, a rosary gripped in her hands.

The star paid an emotional tribute to “all the bright lights” lost to AIDS as she sang “Live to Tell,” with black and white photos of people who died from the illness flashing behind her.

Later, she was joined on stage by Brazilian artists Anitta and Pabllo Vittar.

Rio spent the last few days readying itself for the performance.

An estimated 1.6 million people attended the show, G1 reported, citing Rio City Hall’s tourism agency. That is more than 10 times Madonna’s record attendance of 130,000 at Paris’ Parc des Sceaux in 1987. Madonna’s official website hyped the show as the biggest ever in her four-decade career.

In recent days, the buzz was palpable. Fans milled outside the stately, beachfront Copacabana Palace hotel, where Madonna is staying, hoping to catch a glimpse of the pop star. During the sound check on the stage set up in front of the hotel, they danced on the sand.

By midday Saturday, fans crowded in front of the hotel. A white-bearded man carried a sign saying, “Welcome Madonna you are the best I love you.”

Flags with “Madonna” printed against a background of Copacabana’s iconic black and white waved sidewalk pattern hung from balconies. The area was packed with street vendors and concert attendees kitted out in themed T-shirts, sweating under a baking sun.

“Since Madonna arrived here, I’ve been coming every day with this outfit to welcome my idol, my diva, my pop queen,” said Rosemary de Oliveira Bohrer, 69, who sported a gold-colored cone bra and a black cap.

“It’s going to be an unforgettable show here in Copacabana,” said Oliveira Bohrer, a retired civil servant who lives in the area.

Eighteen sound towers were spread along the beach to ensure that all attendees can hear the hits. Her two-hour show started at 10:37 p.m. local time, nearly 50 minutes behind schedule.

City Hall produced a report in April estimating that the concert would vinject 293 million reals ($57 million) into the local economy. Hotel capacity was expected to reach 98% in Copacabana, according to Rio’s hotel association. Fans hailing from across Brazil and even Argentina and France sought out Airbnbs for the weekend, the platform said in a statement. Rio’s international airport had forecast an extra 170 flights during May 1-6, from 27 destinations, City Hall said in a statement.

“It’s a unique opportunity to see Madonna, who knows if she’ll ever come back,” said Alessandro Augusto, 53, who flew in from Brazil’s Ceara state — approximately 2,500 kilometers (1,555 miles) from Rio.

“Welcome Queen!” read Heineken ads plastered around the city, the lettering above an image of an upturned bottle cap resembling a crown.

Heineken wasn’t the only company seeking to profit from the excitement. Bars and restaurants prepared “Like a Virgin” cocktails. A shop in the downtown neighborhood famed for selling Carnival attire completely reinvented itself, stocking its shelves with Madonna-themed costumes, fans, fanny packs and even underwear.

Organization of the mega-event was similar to New Year’s Eve, when millions of people gather on Copacabana for its fireworks display, local authorities said. That annual event often produces widespread thefts and muggings, and there was some concern such problems might occur at Madonna’s show.

Rio state’s security plan included the presence of 3,200 military personnel and 1,500 civilian police officers on stand by. In the lead-up to the concert, Brazil’s navy inspected vessels that wished to position themselves offshore to follow the show.

A number of huge concerts have taken place on Copacabana beach before, including a 1994 New Year’s Eve show by Rod Stewart that drew more than 4 million fans and was the biggest free rock concert in history, according to Guinness World Records. Many of those spectators also came to see Rio’s fireworks show, though, so a more fitting comparison might be to the Rolling Stones in 2006, which saw 1.2 million people crowd onto the sand, according to Rio’s military police, the newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo reported at the time.

Ana Beatriz Soares, a fan who was at Copacabana on Saturday, said Madonna has made her mark across the decades.

“Madonna had to run so that today’s pop artists could walk. That’s why she’s important, because she serves as an inspiration for today’s pop divas,” Soares said.

“And that’s 40 years ago. Not 40 days, 40 months. It’s 40 years,” she said.

  • World Most Expensive Divorces: Most expensive divorces in the world that shocked people

World Most Expensive Divorces: Most expensive divorces in the world that shocked people

Former Hollywood actor-couple, Amber Heard and Johnny Depp were married for 15 months. However, their’s was one of the most messy divorces which gained a lot of public attention. In 2016, Amber Heard filed for a divorce from Johnny Depp for which she was awarded $7 million as divorce settlement– she donated this money to charity.

But their divorce wasn’t easy, as both Heard and Depp accused each other of domestic abuse. The ex-couple spent a major part of 2020 and 2021 battling in court for a case against The Sun newspaper which called Depp a “wife-beater.” Johnny Depp lost the case and appealed.

In 2022, Heard and Depp came back to court– this time for a defamation case Depp filed against Heard for an op-ed pieve she wrote in the Washington Post in 2018 wherein she wrote about him and the domestic abuse she felt, without naming him. In June, a jury concluded that Heard did defame Depp for which Heard was asked to pay him $15 million for damages, which was later reduced to $10.35 million. Heard then had filed a countersuit, wherein she won one out of three defamation cases for which she was given $2 million. While both Heard and Depp appealed again, in Decemvber 2022 Heard shared that she had settled the matters with her ex-husband Depp. Eventually, Heard had to pay him $1 million which Depp donated to charity.

  • Madonna sued over late concert start time

Madonna sued over late concert start time

Fed up Madonna fans, tired of waiting on her concerts to start, have sued the singer after her New York City shows last month began hours late.

Madonna’s Celebration tour concerts at Barclays Center were scheduled to start at 8:30 p.m., but the pop icon “did not take the stage until after 10:30 p.m. on all three nights,” according to the suit filed Wednesday in Brooklyn federal court. Plaintiffs Michael Fellows and Jonathan Hadden, who attended the Dec. 13 show, said they wouldn’t have purchased tickets if they’d known the concert would start and end so late.

They’re also suing the Barclays Center and Live Nation for “wanton exercise in false advertising, negligent misrepresentation, and unfair and deceptive trade practices.”

The suit notes Madonna’s history of late concert starts. In 2012, a Madonna concert in Miami didn’t start until around 11:30 p.m. The singer’s Melbourne concert in 2016 started more than four hours late while her Brisbane show that same year was delayed by two hours.

Wednesday’s lawsuit over Madonna’s late start times also isn’t the first of its kind. In 2019, a Florida fan sued over a delay, alleging the original 8:30 p.m. start time of a show at the Fillmore Miami Beach was changed to 10:30 p.m.

“There’s something that you all need to understand,” Madonna said during a Las Vegas concert that year. “And that is, that a queen is never late.”

The plaintiffs in the latest suit are expressing themselves about Madonna’s timeliness.

“By the time of the concerts’ announcements, Madonna had demonstrated flippant difficulty in ensuring a timely or complete performance, and Defendants were aware that any statement as to a start time for a show constituted, at best, optimistic speculation,” the suit alleges.

The plaintiffs in Wednesday’s suit allege that, unlike the 2019 Florida show, there was no advance notice of the late start, leaving concertgoers hung up waiting for the December show to start. Most attendees left after 1 a.m., the suit claims, which meant there were limited options for public transportation and ride-sharing.

“In addition, many ticketholders who attended concerts on a weeknight had to get up early to go to work and/or take care of their family responsibilities the next day,” the suit reads.

The plaintiffs are suing for unspecified damages.

Late start times didn’t end in New York. Earlier this month, Madonna took the stage around 10:15 p.m. during a Boston Celebration tour performance, nearly two hours after the scheduled start.

The tour itself also got a late start, although that was a result of Madonna being hospitalized for a bacterial infection.

  • Pepsi and Madonna share never-before-seen commercial that was canceled 34 years go

Pepsi and Madonna share never-before-seen commercial that was canceled 34 years go

In 1989, Madonna starred in a Pepsi commercial that never saw the light of day – until now. The star shared the commercial on Instagram, saying that 34 years after it was canceled, Pepsi was finally revealing the spot.

Madonna said that before the commercial could premiere, her “Like a Prayer” music video came out – and proved controversial.

“The commercial was immediately canceled when I refused to change any scenes in the video where I was kissing a black saint or burning crosses,” she wrote on Instagram. “So began my illustrious career as an artist refusing to compromise my artistic integrity.”

“Thank you [Pepsi] for finally realizing the genius of our collaboration,” she wrote. “Artists are here to disturb the peace.”

“Like A Prayer” was Madonna’s fourth album, featuring hits like “Express Yourself” and “Cherish.” The music video for the titular single featured actor Leon Robinson, who is Black, playing a saint-like figure in a church.

In the video, Madonna witnesses a White woman get killed by White men, but the Black man she is in a relationship with is arrested for the murder. Madonna hides in a church, where she meets the saint and kisses him.

Many condemned the video, which also employed several religious symbols, such as a crucifix.

The Vatican even urged a boycott of her tour. “I am aware that the Vatican and certain communities are accusing my show of being sinful and blasphemous, that they are trying to keep people from seeing it,” Madonna said at the time, according to Entertainment Tonight. “I think I’m offending certain groups, but I think that people who really understand what I’m doing aren’t offended by it.”

Pepsi famously nixed its ad featuring the song before it premiered. “It may go down as one the most expensive advertising blunders ever,” Entertainment Tonight host John Tesh reported at the time.

Despite the backlash, Madonna continued to push the envelope. And Pepsi continued to feature stars in its ads. The brand, celebrating its 125th anniversary, has been sharing those star-studded commercials on social media, including spots with Tina Turner, Ray Charles, Robert Palmer and Britney Spears. And of course, Madonna.

The never-before-seen ad was also shared by Pepsi on Instagram. It shows Madonna singing “Like A Prayer,” in front of a neon Pepsi sign, and holding a can of the soda.

Both Madonna’s and Pepsi’s sharing of the ad was praised and questioned by commenters. “AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!” Andy Cohen commented.

“This song changed my life,” wrote Diplo.

On Pepsi’s post, several commenters said the brand should apologize to the singer. “Alright, are they going to make up for the global boycott they had against her?” one person wrote. “Nearly 10 years of injustice in awards and advertising deals? What makes me feel at ease is knowing she’s always been right and, in fact, ‘ahead of her time and a thousand years ahead of yours.”

“After such a long time??? Don’t you think you should apologise for the way you treated her?!?” another wrote.

“The Queen deserves this and an apology,” another commented.

CBS News has reached out to a representative for Pepsi and is awaiting response.

  • Madonna announces new North American dates for her Celebration Tour

Madonna announces new North American dates for her Celebration Tour

Madonna has announced the rescheduled North American dates of her global Celebration Tour, several weeks after she was hospitalized for a bacterial infection. The singer released the new dates on her website Tuesday, a day before her 65th birthday.

The tour will now kick off in Europe on the originally scheduled dates. Starting in London on October 14, Madonna will go on to play in Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, Spain, Portugal, France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands before touring North America.

Madonna was supposed to start her tour in Vancouver, Canada, on July 15, but Madonna postponed it after spending several days in the ICU in late June due to a “serious bacterial infection,” her manager said at the time.

Less than two weeks later, Madonna took to social media to confirm she was “on the road to recovery” and “getting stronger.”

“My first thought when I woke up in the hospital was my children,” the singer wrote. “My second thought was that I did not want to disappoint anyone who bought tickets for my tour. I also didn’t want to let down the people who worked tirelessly with me over the last few months to create my show. I hate to disappoint anyone.”

“Live Nation is pleased to confirm that most of the North America dates of Madonna’s Celebration Tour have been rescheduled and will take place immediately following the originally announced UK and Europe dates,” the statement on Madonna’s website said.

All tickets for previously scheduled shows will be honored on the new dates, with a few exceptions. Due to venue changes, the shows in Los Angeles and one show in New York will require fresh purchases — ticketholders will be refunded and given priority for the new venues.

Additionally, certain shows in Tulsa, Nashville, San Francisco, Las Vegas, and Phoenix had to be canceled due to scheduling conflicts. “Madonna regrets the inconvenience to fans and hopes to make it up to those markets in the future,” the statement said.

The Celebration Tour’s North American leg will now begin in Brooklyn on December 13 and wrap up in Mexico City in April 2024.

The tour promises to cover all four decades of Madonna’s remarkable career, which began with the 1982 song “Everybody” and rose to national prominence the following year with the song “Holiday.”

“I am excited to explore as many songs as possible in hopes to give my fans the show they have been waiting for,” Madonna said when she announced the tour in January.

Madonna thanks her children, feels lucky to be alive 1 month after health scare

Pop music icon Madonna thanked her children and all the “angels” who protected her one month after she was hospitalized with a serious bacterial infection

The singer, who was hospitalized for several days just before the start of her Celebration Tour, said in an Instagram post Sunday that “love from family and friends is the best medicine.”

“As a Mother you can really get caught up In the needs Of your children and the seemingly endless giving,” she wrote. “But when the chips were down my children really showed up for me. I saw a side to them I had never seen before. It made all the difference.”

Her post included a photo with her son, David Banda, and another with her daughter, Lourdes Leon.

Madonna has six children: Lourdes, Rocco, David, Mercy and twins Estere and Stella. Madonna had Lourdes in 1996 with Carlos Leon. She had Rocco in 2000 with Guy Ritchie. David, Mercy, Estere and Stella were all adopted from the African nation of Malawi.

The singer also thanked her manager, Guy Oseary. She said Oseary gifted her a picture of Keith Haring taken by Andy Warhol. In the picture, Haring, seen from behind, is wearing a jacket with Michael Jackson’s face painted on it.

“I sobbed when I opened this gift because I realized how lucky I am to be alive,” she wrote. “And how fortunate I am to have known these people and so many others who are also gone.”

In late June, Oseary announced that Madonna would need to halt her Celebration Tour, which was scheduled to begin July 15, because of the bacterial infection. The North American leg of the Celebration Tour will be rescheduled, Madonna said. The European leg of the tour will begin in October.

“I assure you, I’ll be back with you as soon as I can,” Madonna said earlier in July.

Madonna says she’s “on the road to recovery” and will reschedule tour after sudden stint in ICU

Madonna says she’s “on the road to recovery” less than two weeks after her manager announced she had been sent to the ICU after developing a “serious bacterial infection.” The singer was hospitalized for several days just before the start of her upcoming Celebration Tour.

In a statement, Madonna said that she is “incredibly grateful for all the blessings in my life.”

“My first thought when I woke up in the hospital was my children,” the 64-year-old singer said along with a selife. “My second thought was that I did not want to disappoint anyone who bought tickets for my tour. I also didn’t want to let down the people who worked tirelessly with me over the last few months to create my show. I hate to disappoint anyone.”

In her first post on Twitter since being hospitalized, Madonna said that she is now focused on improving her health and “getting stronger.”

“I assure you, I’ll be back with you as soon as I can,” she said.

The North American leg of the Celebration Tour, which was slated to kick off in Vancouver before heading to the U.S. on July 18, will be rescheduled, she said. The European leg of the tour will now begin in October.

Her manager Guy Oseary had announced Madonna’s health scare on June 28, saying a non-specified “serious bacterial infection” resulted in her needs to stay “several” days in the ICU. While here health was improving at the time of his announcement and a full recovery was expected, he said she was still under medical care.

All commitments at that time were canceled, including the tour.
