Two Chinese among 4 killed in attack on DRC gold convoy – SUCH TV

Two Chinese nationals and two others have been killed in an attack on a convoy carrying gold in the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s lawless east.

According to international media reports, Friday’s ambush targeted a four-vehicle convoy belonging to TSM Mining that was carrying gold from a site near the Kimbi river in the Fizi region of South Kivu province.

The attackers “stole parcels of gold which they took away into the bush”, said Sammy Badibanga Kalondji, an official in Fizi.

The two others killed were a soldier and a driver from the DRC.

Kalondji said three others were wounded in the attack – a Chinese mine employee and two locals, another soldier and a mine worker.

The attackers were from the neighbouring Maniema region, he said.

China is a major investor in the DRC where the Asian power dominates the lucrative mineral mining industry.

Evacuation of foreign nationals under way in Niger as regional tensions rise – SUCH TV

Foreign nationals have lined up outside an airport in Niger’s capital waiting for a third evacuation flight, while a regional bloc continued talks about its response to the coup that took place last week.

According to international media reports, after a third flight was cancelled the night before, hundreds of people lined up outside the terminal at Niamey’s airport before sunrise on Wednesday, hoping to leave.

France, Italy and Spain all announced evacuations for their citizens and other Europeans following last week’s military coup, which ousted and detained President Mohamed Bazoum.

The United States has yet to announce plans for an evacuation. However, some have left with the help of the Europeans.

French forces in the capital, Niamey, evacuated hundreds of mostly French nationals to Paris on two flights on Tuesday, following concerns that their citizens and other Europeans risked becoming trapped by the coup.

The first of two French flights that landed in Paris overnight had 12 babies among 262 people aboard, most of them French but including evacuees from Niger, Portugal, Belgium, Ethiopia and Lebanon, France’s Foreign Ministry said.

An Italian military aircraft landed in Rome Wednesday with 99 passengers, including 21 Americans and civilians from other countries, said the Italian defence minister.

Countries evacuate citizens amidst raging battle in Sudan – SUCH TV

Foreign countries have rushed to evacuate their nationals from Sudan as deadly fighting raged into a second week between forces loyal to two rival generals.

According to international media reports, evacuation flights were continuing early Monday, with hundreds of people flown out overnight on military aircraft.

Foreigners also fled the capital Khartoum in a long United Nations convoy, while millions of frightened residents hunkered down inside their homes, many running low on water and food.

Across the city of five million, army and paramilitary troops have fought ferocious street battles since April 15, leaving behind charred tanks, gutted buildings and looted shops.

More than 420 people have been killed and thousands wounded, according to UN figures, amid fears of wider turmoil and a humanitarian disaster in one of the world’s poorest nations.

US special forces launched a rescue mission Sunday for around 100 embassy staff and their relatives, swooping in with Chinook helicopters to fly them to a military base in Djibouti.

US forces “will remain deployed in Djibouti to protect United States personnel and others until the security situation no longer requires their presence”, President Joe Biden said Sunday in a letter to the Speaker of the House.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said UK forces had also rescued diplomats and their families while Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said his country had temporarily suspended its evacuation operation.

“Our diplomats are safe – they have been extracted and are working from outside the country,” Trudeau tweeted.

Germany and France meanwhile said they had also begun evacuating their nationals and those from other countries.

Two French planes carrying around 200 people of multiple nationalities landed in Djibouti.

Nearly 1,000 Turkish citizens set out for home from two points in the capital Khartoum and another point from Wad Madani city, according to Turkish media.

The German army said it had evacuated 101 people on the first of three military aircraft sent to Sudan.

The first Airbus A400M “landed safely in Jordan” at around midnight local time (2100 GMT Sunday), the Bundeswehr said on Twitter. Another plane with 113 people was on its way to Jordan, it said.

Italy evacuated about 300 people in total, according to their foreign ministries.

Ireland said it was also dispatching an emergency team to assist with evacuating its citizens and their dependants.

Egypt, Sudan’s large neighbour to the north, said it had evacuated 436 nationals by land.

Chinese nationals killed by armed group in Central African Republic – SUCH TV

Raiders have killed nine Chinese nationals in an attack on a mine in the Bambari region of the Central African Republic, a local mayor said.

“We have counted nine bodies and two wounded,” the mayor of Bambari, Abel Matchipata, told reporters on Sunday, adding that the victims were Chinese workers at a site run by the Gold Coast Group, 25 kilometres (15 miles) from his town.

The attack by “armed men” happened early in the morning, he added.

The local authorities did not release further details of the attack, nor was there any claim of responsibility.

According to international media reports, the victim’s bodies were transferred to a hospital in Bangui, where Chinese ambassador Li Qinfeng and CAR Foreign Minister Sylvie Baipo Temon attended.

China’s embassy in the Central African Republic has urged its citizens to avoid travelling outside the capital, Bangui, after a report that nine Chinese nationals were killed by rebels at a gold mine outside the city.

The embassy said in a statement on Sunday there had been many “vicious” security incidents against workers of foreign mining enterprises in the area, and Chinese citizens still outside Bangui were requested to evacuate immediately.

Civil conflict has hit the Central African Republic, one of the world’s poorest countries, since 2013 when armed groups ousted president Francois Bozize.
