SpiceJet Begins Delhi-Shillong Direct Flight Service, To Operate Twice a Week

Indian budget air carrier, SpiceJet, has launched a direct flight service from Delhi to Shillong, capital of Meghalya in North East India. The airline said the Delhi-Shillong flight would operate biweekly, on Monday and Friday. The inaugural flight landed from the Delhi Internationl Airport at the Shillong Airport with 18 passengers on Friday, February 24, 2023. The same flight took off with 12 outbound passengers from the Shillong Airport to Delhi Airport in the national capital, an Airport official told PTI.

With this, SpiceJet has become the third airline to start scheduled flights from Shillong after Indigo and Alliance Air. The route was awarded to Fly Big airlines earlier under the UDAN Scheme (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik). The regional airline had operated the Shillong – Delhi route, but an MoU with them was withdrawn last year.

Later, SpiceJet had entered into an MoU with the Meghalaya government in January 2023, to connect the Meghalaya capital with the national capital. Taking on Twitter, SpiceJet wrote, “Connecting the unconnected. Flying now to Shillong”. The airline also shared a few glimpses of the inaugural flight to Shillong.

PTI reports that senior government officials including transport department secretary H Kharmalki and MTC MD KL Nongbri were present at the inaugural flight.

  • ‘Kill Me, But I Will Smoke’: Semi-Naked Woman Creates Ruckus on Aeroflot Flight, Bit Cabin Crew

‘Kill Me, But I Will Smoke’: Semi-Naked Woman Creates Ruckus on Aeroflot Flight, Bit Cabin Crew

A  49-year-old female passenger Anzhelika Moskvitina was arrested by police for creating ruckus on an Aeroflot flight from Stavropol to Moscow. She bared her chest in front of other passengers – including children – on the flight in protest of not letting her smoke in the lavatory on the plane. As per a report on Mirror, the woman passenger was restrained with cuffs on the flight, and was handed over to the cops upon landing in Moscow. A video has surfaced on the social media platforms revealing the moment when the woman – suspected of being intoxicated – was arguing with cabin crew as they sought to pacify her.

As per reports, the high drama began at a height of 33,000 ft when Anzhelika Moskvitina locked herself in the toilet and smoked while the plane was going through turbulence. When asked to back to her seat, she bared herself open in front of everyone, and demanded to enter the cockpit. As business class passengers assisted the crew to restrain her, she bit one of the male cabin crew.

On the order of the captain, she was handcuffed using plastic cuff on the flight and was taken to the galley, where the purported video of the conversation between a crew member and Moskvitina was recorded.

    Conversation between attendant and passenger

As seen in the video, the cabin crew asks the unruly passenger to take a seat and get dressed, “take a seat and get dressed,” she was ordered by the crew. “Where are your clothes?” She was asked: “Do you understand you’re violating the behaviour rules on the plane? There are children here. Respect them at least.”

She replied: “I respect children. What’s more, I love children. I understand I’ll go to the mental hospital or a prison. But I want to go to the cockpit.” She was told her demand was “senseless”.

As the crew sought to make her dress, she replied: “Please go away from me. Kill me here, but I will smoke.” She was urged to “calm down”, but repeated to the crew to “leave me alone” and “let me go”.

  • Air India Places Order for 470 Aircrafts With Airbus, Boeing; Deal to be Worth USD 80 Billion

Air India Places Order for 470 Aircrafts With Airbus, Boeing; Deal to be Worth USD 80 Billion

Air India, the Tata-owned airline has placed a massive deal of 470 aircrafts with French planemaker Airbus and US-based aircraft maker Boeing. The order is one of the largest for any airline in the world and is estimated to be worth USD 80 billion (over Rs 6.40 lakh crore). Under the agreement with the plane makers, Air India will buy both narrow-body and wide-body planes. While Prime Minister Narendra Modi described Air India-Airbus transaction as a “landmark deal”, US President Joe Biden hailed the agreement as “historic”.

Air India will buy 250 aircrafts from European aviation major Airbus, and 220 planes from US aircraft maker Boeing under separate deals. This is also the first time in more than 17 years that Air India, which was acquired from the government by Tata Group in January 2022, has ordered planes. According to Air India, the first of the new aircraft will enter service in late 2023 and the bulk of the planes are to arrive from mid-2025 onwards. A350 will be utilised for ultra-long haul.

    Air India-Airbus Deal

Under the deal with Airbus, Air India will buy 250 aircrafts and the order comprises of 40 Airbus A350 wide body plane, as well as 210 Airbus A320/321 Neos single aisle narrow body planes. The A350 aircraft will be powered by Rolls-Royce engines, while the single-aisle aircraft will be powered by engines from CFM International, Air India said in a statement.

The announcement of the aircraft purchase deal with Airbus was made at an online event that was attended by Modi, French President Emmanuel Macron, Union ministers Jyotiraditya Scindia and Piyush Goyal, Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran, Tata Group patriarch Ratan Tata, Air India CEO Campbell Wilson and Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury.

Macron said Air India’s deal with Airbus for the acquisition of 250 aircraft was one of the milestones of the in-depth strategic and friendly partnership between India and France.

    Air India-Boeing Deal

As per the agreement with Boeing, Air India will get 220 planes, with 20 Boeing 787s wide body plane, 10 Boeing 777-9s wide-body aircraft,  and 190 Boeing 737 MAX single-aisle aircraft. The Boeing 777/787s will be powered by the engines from GE Aerospace.

In an announcement, the White House said Boeing and Air India have reached an agreement under which the airline will purchase 220 planes from Boeing — 190 B737 MAX, 20 B787, and 10 B777X — for USD 34 billion. There will be an option to buy 70 more aircraft that could take the total transaction value to USD 45.9 billion.

Modi and President Biden welcomed the announcement of the landmark agreement between Air India and Boeing as a “shining example of mutually beneficial cooperation that will help create new employment opportunities in both countries”, according to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

In a message to Air India staff, CEO Campbell Wilson said “The firm part of the order alone is not just the largest order ever made by an Indian airline, it is one of the largest single aircraft orders by any airline, anywhere, ever, and testifies to India’s unique combination of extraordinary scale and growth opportunity.”

Tata Sons and Air India Chairman N Chandrasekaran said the orders are an important step in realising Air India’s ambition, articulated in its Vihaan.AI transformation programme, to offer a world-class proposition serving global travellers with an Indian heart. “These new aircraft will modernise the airline’s fleet and onboard product, and dramatically expand its global network”.

    Air India-Rolls Royce Deal

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak hailed a multi-billion-pound deal by Airbus and Rolls-Royce to supply new aircraft to Air India as a landmark moment for the country’s aerospace sector and reiterated his commitment to continue building ties with India.

In a tweet, Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said the historic agreement between Air India and Airbus is a testimony to the growing importance of civil aviation.

Air India, earlier under the ownership of the government, had acquired new aircraft more than 17 years ago.

The airline’s last order was for 111 planes — 68 from Boeing and 43 from Airbus — and that deal was worth USD 10.8 billion. The order was placed in 2005.

  • Vistara Becomes First Airline in India to Induct Airbus A321LR, Gets Extended Flying Range

Vistara Becomes First Airline in India to Induct Airbus A321LR, Gets Extended Flying Range

Vistara Airline, a Joint Venture between Tata Group and Singapore International Airlines has inducted India’s first Long Range Airbus A321LR aircraft. The full service carrier Vistara continues to expand its fleet and expects to have a total of 70 planes by mid-2024, its chief Vinod Kannan recently said. Out of the total 70 planes, there will also be 10 Airbus A321s and 53 A320 neos for domestic routes, and 7 Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner wide body planes for serving international markets. Among the 53 A320 neos, 10 planes will have all economy class and the rest will have three classes. Currently, the airline has a fleet of 53 aircraft.

“We will continue to expand… More international routes (will be added),” Kannan said. “The percentage of capacity deployed internationally has increased. We have 25-30 per cent deployed internationally… That is quite positive and a game changer for us,” Kannan said at a briefing.

Vistara is soon set to be merged with Air India, the former national air carrier. According to him, there are constraints in terms of traffic rights and slots. “We would love to operate more flights to Dubai, Singapore but those are all constrained by traffic rights. We had to look at other options… We will be looking at more points in the Middle East,” he added.

“Strong demand which resulted in high load factor and that demand was not turned away due to high fares, (so), we were able to get a very strong revenue performance. The second aspect is that the US dollar and fuel price have been on an increasing trend… We have some sort of scale, we have 53 aircraft. So, obviously unit cost and deployment does reduce to a certain extent,” Kannan said.

Further, he said there is also the impact of the deployment of wide-body aircraft and currently Vistara has three such planes in its fleet. “They have been doing extremely well and the demand to Europe has been strong. In fact, flights have been flying with load factors in excess of 85-90 per cent. Therefore, that plays a positive role in the performance of the airline,” he added.

  • New Zealand Flooding: Emirates Dubai-Auckland A380 Flight Makes U-Turn After Being 7 Hrs in Sky

New Zealand Flooding: Emirates Dubai-Auckland A380 Flight Makes U-Turn After Being 7 Hrs in Sky

An Emirates Airline flight going from Dubai to Auckland made a U-turn 7 hours after being in the air, due to flooding in New Zealand. As seen on flight tracking website FlightRadar24, an Airbus A380 superjumbo plane operated by Emirates on the way to Auckland Airport returned back to the Dubai International Airport after travelling for 7 hours due to heavy rainfall in New Zealand, that resulted in flooding in many parts of the country, including Auckland. The flight was over the Indian Ocean, near Malaysia, when a decision to return back to the originating country was taken by the Captain.

Torrential rain and wild weather in Auckland on Friday caused disruptions throughout New Zealand’s largest city. Video posted online showed waist-deep water in some places, and authorities were asking residents in flood-prone areas to be prepared in case they needed to evacuate. Lawmaker Ricardo Mendez posted a video of water surging into residential houses. “We’ve just had to evacuate our home as the water was already rising rapidly and coming in aggressively,” he tweeted.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand said it had taken over 1,000 calls for help, but that many calls were from people who had flooded properties. The agency was urging callers to clear the lines for those in immediate danger. The unseasonable weather also caused some flights to be delayed or canceled.

Auckland Airport said it had reduced its runway operations after an arriving aircraft had damaged runway lighting. “This is largely impacting international arrivals and departures and larger aircraft travelling domestically,” the airport wrote on Twitter. “Our maintenance team is on site and is working hard to fix the damage.”

The storm also caused an Elton John concert to be canceled just before it was due to start. About 40,000 people were expected to attend the evening concert at Mt Smart Stadium in New Zealand’s largest city. Thousands were already at the venue when organizers decided to cancel not long before John was due to take the stage at 7:30 p.M.

The concert was billed as a final farewell tour for John. Frontier Touring, one of the concert promoters, tweeted the concert had been canceled due to unsafe weather conditions. Many concert goers who had braved the conditions were frustrated the decision hadn’t been made hours earlier.

Weather agency MetService warned of flash flooding and hazardous driving conditions. On Friday night, transport authorities closed parts of State Highway 1, the main highway that bisects Auckland.

Air India acknowledges gaps in reporting peeing incident, says taking steps after DGCA action

After aviation regulator DGCA initiated enforcement actions, Air India on Friday said it respectfully acknowledges the gaps in reporting with respect to the urination incident onboard a New York-Delhi flight last year and that relevant steps are being taken to address the issues. The incident where a passenger allegedly relieved himself on a female passenger happened on the AI-102 flight from New York to Delhi on November 26 last year but came to the notice of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) only on January 4.

On Friday, DGCA said it has imposed a penalty of Rs 30 lakh on Air India as well as suspended the license of the pilot-in-command of the flight in connection with the incident. A fine of Rs 3 lakh has also been imposed on the airline’s Director of in-flight services. These enforcement actions have been taken for various violations.

“We are in receipt of today’s order of the Director General of Civil Aviation and are studying the same. We respectfully acknowledge the gaps in our reporting and are taking relevant steps to ensure that the same are addressed,” an Air India spokesperson said in a statement.

According to the spokesperson, the airline is also strengthening our crews’ awareness about policies on the handling of incidents involving unruly passengers. “Air India is committed to stand by the safety and well-being of our passengers”.

  • Go First plane takes off from Bengaluru airport leaving 55 passengers behind; DGCA seeks report

Go First plane takes off from Bengaluru airport leaving 55 passengers behind; DGCA seeks report

As per a report on ANI, a Delhi-bound Go First plane on reportedly left the Bengaluru International Airport without taking more than 50 passengers, leaving them behind in the shuttle bus. Following the incident, India’s aviation regulator DGCA has sought a detailed report from the domestic budget airline. Many passengers complained on Twitter, tagging the Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, asking him to look into the incident. The flight G8 116 departed at 6.40 am on January 9, 2023, leaving behind the passengers, they alleged. Go First declined to comment on the incident.

As per the reports, a group of passengers, who were waiting in a shuttle bus for boarding, were left behind at the tarmac, as the flight took off with only a few passengers. Some passengers alleged on social media that a busload of passengers were not taken onboard the Go First flight from Bengaluru to Delhi. In response to one of the tweets, the airline urged the users to share their details and said: “We regret the inconvenience caused”.

“Flight G8 116 (BLR-DEL) flew leaving passengers on ground! More than 50 passengers on 1 bus were left on ground & the flight took off with just passengers of 1 bus on boarded. Is @GoFirstairways @JM_Scindia @PMOIndia operating in sleep? No Basic checks!” said a tweet from a passenger named Satish Kumar.

Another passenger Shreya Sinha too complained on Twitter, saying, “most horrifying experience with @GoFirstairways 5:35 am Boarded the bus for aircraft 6:30 am Still in bus stuffed with over 50 passengers, driver stopped the bus after being forced. Flight G8 116 takes off, leaving 50+ passengers. Heights of negligence! @DGCAIndia”.

A senior official at the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said, “We have sought a report from the airline and appropriate action shall be taken afterwards”. 53 out of 55 passengers were shifted to another airline for Delhi and onward, while remaining 2 asked for a refund which was paid by the airline.

  • Aviation experts call for stricter punishment to tackle unruly flyers amid Air India pee-gate

Aviation experts call for stricter punishment to tackle unruly flyers amid Air India pee-gate

Air India’s handling of an incident in which an inebriated male flier allegedly urinated on a woman co-passenger suggests an urgent need for stricter rules to deal with unruly passengers, according to legal and aviation experts. Instances of inappropriate conduct on flights have gone up in the recent past because airlines try to cover up such incidents due to their commercial interests, the experts said. According to police, the male passenger, Shankar Mishra, allegedly urinated on a woman co-passenger in her 70s in the business class of the Air India flight from New York to Delhi on November 26 last year.

Delhi Police registered an FIR against him on January 4 on a complaint given by the woman to Air India and arrested him from Bengaluru on Saturday. To prevent such incidents in future, the experts said, the Civil Aviation Requirements (CAR) of 2017 for handling of unruly passengers should be amended.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) framed the rules in 2017 after the then Shiv Sena MP Ravindra Gaikwad assaulted an Air India staff member. Under these rules, unruly behaviour by a passenger onboard a flight is a punishable offence.

Supreme Court lawyer Ujjawal Anand Sharma said lodging an FIR in all cases of unruly behaviour by passengers onboard flights should be made compulsory under CAR, 2017. “I think there is a need to amend it (CAR, 2017) and make it compulsory to lodge an FIR in all cases of unruly behaviour onboard (flights) irrespective of the level of seriousness (of the offence),” said Sharma, who had represented stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra in the alleged unruly behaviour case in the Delhi High Court.

Sharma, who is also a Partner at Lawmen & White law firm, said, “It should be made part of the SoP (standard operating procedure) to inform the local police after the aircraft lands. Also, I believe that instead of an internal committee of an airline, there should be an independent committee under the DGCA which should be informed about every case of unruly behaviour.”

This will also help airlines avoid allegations of hushing up the matter. According to CAR, 2017, the captain and the crew of a flight are supposed to inform the airline about a passenger’s unruly behaviour once the aircraft lands at its destination airport. The airline will present the case before its internal committee which comprises a retired district session judge and two independent members.

“Pending decision of the Internal Committee, the concerned airline may ban such unruly passenger from flying, but such period may not exceed a period of 30 days,” the rules state. According to the rules, “The Internal Committee shall give the final decision in 30 days by giving the reasons in writing. The decision of the Internal Committee shall be binding on the airline concerned. In case the Internal Committee fails to take a decision in 30 days, the passenger will be free to fly.”

CAR, 2017 grades offences into three categories and once the internal committee decides the level of offence and imposes a ban on the passenger, the decision has to be communicated to the DGCA/other airlines and the person should be put on the no-fly list.

Such a passenger can be banned for a minimum of three months in case of a level 1 offence and a maximum of two years for a level 3 offence. The rules necessitate lodging an FIR only in extreme cases of aggressive behaviour by a passenger which may cause the aircraft to make an emergency landing.

Nishant Kr. Srivastava, a criminal lawyer and Founder of Actus Legal Associates & Advocates, said an unruly passenger should be barred from flying with any airline till the inquiry is pending.

“The present norms say that an unruly passenger will be banned from flying for 30 days till the Internal Committee of that particular airline decides his/her case. Meanwhile, he can fly with other airlines. It should be made more deterrent by banning him from flying with any airline,” he said.

Mohit Chand Mathur, a senior advocate in the Delhi High Court, underlined the need for timely implementation of the existing legal provisions to avoid a repeat of such incidents.

On January 5, the DGCA pulled up the Tata Group-owned Air India, saying prima facie it emerges that provisions related to handling of unruly passengers were not complied with. It said Air India’s conduct appeared to be “unprofessional”.

A US-based doctor who was seated next to the accused spoke out about the November 26 incident, alleging the flight crew showed “no compassion” and failed in their responsibility on several counts as they made the woman talk to the man after his “indecent exposure” and she was made to go back to her soiled seat.

Aviation professionals also stressed the need for stricter punishment to bring down instances of unruly behaviour by passengers. “It is the responsibility of the government and the industry to impose and implement strict rules against such offenders,” said Sharad Kumar, director, Chennai Airport.

Crew members should be better trained to handle such situations, he said. “The male passenger (who urinated on his co-passenger on the Air India flight) should be banned across airports. He should not be allowed to enter any airport for at least a year,” said industry expert R Ramkumar.

Air India has issued show cause notices to four cabin crew and one pilot of its New York-Delhi flight and de-rostered them pending investigation. The airline’s CEO and Managing Director Campbell Wilson said on Sunday that “we fell short of addressing this situation the way we should have”.

He said the airline will “review and repair every process to prevent or address any incidents of such unruly nature”.
