Insud Pharma opens development & manufacturing centre for novel SMA oligonucleotide in Hyderabad – Times of India

HYDERABAD: Spanish pharma player Insud Pharma on Thursday said it has set up a dedicated oligonucleotides centre at the Hyderabad campus of its wholly owned arm Chemo India Formulation Private Limited.
The first-of-its-kind research and production centre, which is focused on oligonucleotides research and commercial production, will have the capability to produce Nusinersen, a novel antisense oligonucleotide for the treatment of Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), a rare disease.
The facility has been inspected and approved by the US FDA, Spanish Health Agency, Drugs Controller General of India, and several international customers, Insud Pharma said.
The facility, which was inaugurated by Telangana industries minister KT Rama Rao on Thursday, will develop and manufacture products for exports to global markets.
The oligonucleotide-based drugs, which represent the latest in medical technology, employ small nucleic acid molecules to interact with DNA or RNA, regulating gene expression and treating conditions such as neurodegenerative diseases.
