Japan Airlines plane in flames on airport runway after collision

TOKYO — Japan Airlines flight JAL 516 appeared to be on fire on the runway at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport on Tuesday, according to footage from national broadcaster NHK.

Footage showed the plane burning as it moved along the runway before becoming engulfed after it came to a standstill.

All 367 passengers and 12 crew members escaped the plane, NHK reported. Rescuers were seen on NHK footage extinguishing the fire.

The plane was heading from Sapporo, in northern Japan, to Tokyo, NHK reported. The Japanese Coast Guard said the plane collided with an aircraft that belonged to the Haneda Air Base.

The flight was scheduled to land at 5:35 p.m. local time, NHK reported. By 5:50, there was footage of the plane on fire on social media. All runways at Haneda Airport were shut down at 6 p.m., NHK reported.

This is a developing story and will be updated. Julia Mio Inuma contributed to this report.
