As temperatures soar, the blaring heat can have a significant impact on people living with diabetes. The combination of high temperatures, humidity and dryness could affect the tolerance of diabetics as they tend to feel more heat than people who don’t have diabetes. Fluctuating blood sugar levels may pose many challenges for them. However, by understanding these effects and adopting preventive measures, diabetics can enjoy a safe and healthy summer season. Is diabetes worse in the summer?  

People with diabetes may have a greater susceptibility to the adverse effects of heat. Alterations in glucose homeostasis and changes in insulin kinetics are possible in summer. Sweat glands are also affected and the body can’t cool effectively, making diabetics lose too much water from their bodies. All of this can lead to:  

  • Dehydration   
  • Exhaustion  
  • Hypoglycemia or Hyperglycemia  
  • Electrolyte imbalance  
  • Frequent urination

How Can You Control Diabetes In Summer:  

1. Stay hydrated:  

Staying well-hydrated is paramount. One should consume ample water throughout the day, even if they do not feel particularly thirsty. 2. Avoid caffeine or alcohol: 

Caffeine and alcohol can lead to water loss and spike your blood sugar levels. It’s best to avoid them and have other healthy drinks. Try these caffeine-free beverages to stay energised.

Don’t put a damper on your summer holiday plans. But make sure to always carry healthy snacks like fruits and drinks like lemonade with your while travelling to stay satiated and hydrated.

4. Monitor your blood glucose level   

High temperatures can change how your body uses insulin so regular monitoring becomes even more important in summer. Check with your doctor iF you need to adjust your insulin dose and tweak your diet. 

5. Eat nourishing meals every day
